Not quite sure what's going on really. Time was when you bought your gay erotica (discreet cover, brown paper bag, read it at home only) that you kind of assumed that Butch Masters wasn't really the authors name, but you knew it was a gay bloke, cos he knew only the things that gay blokes know about oosies-what-inter-thingy, you know... that!
However! I innocently added some hot sounding one handed reading to my Amazon shopping cart. I was very surprised to discover, on delivery, that half of what i bought has been written by women! American women! American homemaking women! Women who have kids and have been married for 20 years and stuff like that.
The best/worst of it is, man... those women know how to write some hot gay sex. I'm not talking above neck, peck on the cheek, smouldering looks, kind of namby pamby stuff. I'm talking about the kind of stuff, where in the epilogue, the hero is fisting the other hero - and they're both enjoying it.
They go by their initials rather than full names - I.P. Freely, rather than Isabel Freely - so that's a bit of a swizz, but i can see why. If i'd known in advance it was a woman writing it, i probably wouldn't have bought it. But now, having bought it, read it and then discovered who wrote it, i'm looking to see what else they've written. I'm so cheap...
At the grand old age of thirty-mumble, i've wised up to the fact i don't care who writes my porn, as long as it's hot.
But, there's more... there seems to be this world of straight women who really enjoy reading and writing about gay men getting off in deliciously nasty ways. Slash fiction, or m/m fiction it's called. A whole new world to explore really.
Really these are romance books, but rather than it being the star crossed tale of Nathaniel and Adrienne, it's Nate and Aiden - and they get up to all sorts of shenanigans. And I mean ALL sorts. And as many different settings and styles - paranormal, sci-fi, modern, thrillers...
Authors to look out for, should you be so inclined are JL Langley, Ally Blue, GA Hauser - all women and all writing some good stuff, not exactly literature - but good plots, engaging characters, and the other ;-)
